The word “laparoscopy” comes from the ancient greek words laparos (belly, abdomen), and scopein (to see). Laparoscopy is the concept to place a small camera into the abdomen in order to see the intraabdoinal content.

This concept is as old as 50 years but has really gained momentum when smaller cameras and instruments available in the early 1990’s made it possible not just to see, but also to perform procedures this way. The advantage was immediately obvious: Smaller incisions.

Incision size: Why is this so important?

The size of the incision for porstoperative recover was disputed to be a factor for the longest time: Arguments like: “The wound heals from side-to-side, and not from the ends” were made.

It turns out that actually looking at patient outcome data taught us otherwise. It turns out that the concept of considering at how patients actually did (as opposed to what powerful medical chairpeople said) is a very powerful, yet embarrassingly recent concept in our profession. Patients who had smaller incisions recovered from surgery sooner!

As a case in point gall bladder surgery may stand in as proxy: It used to be that a patient after gall bladder surgery stayed in the hospital for 2-3 week. Nowadays, after introduction oflaparoscopic procedures by general surgery (about 1990), the patients routinely go home the SAME DAY.

Finally the conservative crowd of urologists adopted this revolutionary technique. Patients leave the hospital with minimal pain about one to two days after a kidney removal or kidney stone removal.

As the first institution using laparoscopic surgery in southeastern Idaho the Urology Center of Idaho is proud to have Dr. Bjorn Sauerwein on staff who brought these techniques to the area.
