A Vasectomy is the most effective way to prevent unwanted pregnancy. It does this by simply interrupting the tube carrying the sperm. It is important to know that a vasectomy in no way has any effect on masculinity or sexual experience.

A vasectomy is done under simple local anesthesia in the Urology Center if Idaho’s office setting. It is done through an about ¼ inch opening in the skin. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and is painless. Patients may go home immediately after the procedure.

We ask that patients refrain from intense physical or sexual activity for about 2 days in order to avoid bleeding. After this, normal activity can be resumed. There is virtually no pain during recovery.

Alternative procedures such as bilateral tubal ligation or tubal occlusion procedures are more invasive and have a higher operative risk when compared to vasectomy. Also, vasectomy allows women to discontinue oral contraceptives avoiding the potential risks these medications may have over time.

It is important to understand that sterility does not occur immediately after a vasectomy because it takes time for the sperm to clear from the system. A semen analysis at 2 months following the procedure is done to ensure the absence of sperm.

Dr. Bjorn Sauerwein at the Urology Center of Idaho has extensive experience with this procedure and is available to discuss any concerns with you.
